CPAWS comments on Rouge National Urban Park draft management plan

Prioritization of conservation:

Consistent with CPAWS previous submissions, we continue to highlight that it is of utmost importance that the legislation and management plan prioritize nature conservation in order to provide a strong overarching conservation framework for improving the ecosystem health of the park. This is necessary to align the Rouge National Urban Park with the international definition and guidance on what constitutes a protected area. Consistent with this guidance and with other provincial and federal protected area legislation, the RNUP legislation and policy should make it clear that other important management goals and actions, such as connecting people to nature, must happen in a way that does not compromise this overarching conservation goal, and in fact help to improve the park’s ecosystem health.
