As Canadians head to the polls, it’s a chance to choose candidates who will safeguard our environmental future. Otherwise we risk falling behind at a time when the stakes have never been higher and the need for action more urgent.

At Wildlands League, we want to work with you to ensure nature is part of the national conversation. Our forests, freshwater, parks, and wildlife are more than beautiful backdrops; they are the foundation of our health, economy, identity, and climate resilience. And they need us all to stand up for nature and a more liveable world.

Speak up for our natural world because we know the birds, belugas, turtles, fish, trees and plants can’t!

Parliamentarians in the next federal government will shape and determine how Canada responds to climate change, biodiversity loss, and increasing pressure on natural ecosystems.

While we’ve got our eye on many areas related to nature, climate, critical minerals and healthy communities, here are three things to raise with candidates. How they will:

  • Secure our freshwater sovereignty in the Great Lakes that provides drinking water for 10 million Canadians?
  • Protect our forests in the face of the increased severity and frequency of wildfires? Hint: this means rethinking outdated logging practices, investing in nature-based climate solutions, and making forest health a national priority; and,
  • Meet our international commitment to permanently protect 30% of our land and waters by 2030 and set the stage for protecting 50% by 2050? And doing all this in partnership with Indigenous peoples?

The federal government holds critical responsibilities including over fisheries and the ocean, migratory birds, navigation, species at risk, the well-being of Indigenous peoples and setting minimum standards to incentivize businesses and individuals to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. They represent all Canadians on the international stage in these efforts too.

Your vote matters. We need to not only stand united and resolute in the face of annexation and unjustified tariffs; we also need to speak up for our water, our ocean, wildlife and our natural world.
