Stop Ontario’s Reckless Power Grab – Say NO to Bill 5
As the US threatens us, Ontario’s response is to propose a new omnibus bill that if passed would gut protections for vulnerable wildlife, fast track mining and development projects, trample Indigenous rights, silence local voices and create law-free zones for trusted proponents or areas as designated by cabinet.
Bill 5 has little to do with US tariffs and everything to do with recklessly and irresponsibly clearing the legislative and regulatory paths for industry and other chosen proponents.
The bill:
- repeals the Endangered Species Act
- guts requirements for environmental assessment for Wyloo’s Eagles Nest mine in the Ring of Fire, and
- creates new “special economic zones” where cabinet would exempt ‘trusted’ proponents and designated areas from laws and regulations including municipal oversight
Vaguely defined, it appears any person – friend of the government – or anywhere in the province could be covered by these new law-less zones.
Ontario is proposing to take us down a dangerous deregulation path. We must stand up for vulnerable wildlife and for each other.
Wildlands League is calling for the withdrawal of Bill 5. Tell your MPP to say No to Bill 5.
