A unique opportunity exists for the First Nation communities that live in the northern boreal; their lands have not yet been allocated by governments for forestry licenses, transmission lines, or roads. These communities still have the option to decide the future for their lands by implementing land-use planning before development occurs. As compared to the allocated forest, there is greater potential in this northern forest region for communities and to have a say in land-use decisions.
But Time is Running Out…
The window for First Nations and the public to make decisions about protecting lands in the northern boreal forest is quickly narrowing as development proceeds in the absence of land-use planning.
This means that all weather roads, hydro corridors, mines, forestry and other developments are all being planned for in isolation and without consideration of cumulative impacts, community benefits, habitat for threatened species, cultural values, important spiritual and archeological sites, intact watersheds, the climate and globally significant intact forests.
